kills about 400,000 people in the US every year. Most of these people died because a defibrillator was not immediately available.  CPR without defibrillation immediately following a heart attack or other heart stopping event gives a less than 5% chance of survival.  Use of an automatic defibrillator within the first few minutes can restart the heart and save a life in 90% of cases.
